BEFORE & AFTER - EDITING MENTALITY

Because these portraits where shot at a training camp, most of the skaters where sweaty and flushed from the exercises they had been doing. This is a calculated risk to photograph people like this because they are potentially not going to look the greatest and when using sharp lenses and good lights, all the flaws are going to come out.

My intention of these portraits isn't to make the images as slick as say a fashion or beauty portrait, but to show the skaters as they really are. To me, the blemishes in this style of portrait is actually distracting. I could easily just turn the images to black and white and a lot of the issues would be resolved, but I wanted colour. So my editing philosophy for these portraits is fairly simple. Take out anything that has been added in from exertion, mainly on a skin level. Keep most of the flaws that each skater has normally has (ie. leave permanent marks, etc). Fix any hair or clothes that I find really distracting and overall make a clean profile that doesn't completely show how sweaty and exhausted the skater actually is.

With permission from Han, I have created a basic animated GIF of the above picture edit. Note, GIF only have 256 colours, therefore don't look for detail but watch at the transition.

Derby Derby Derby...

Say the title three times fast and a face painted derby girl will appear. Then again, maybe not.

This weekend is the next set of bouts for the Victoria/Tasmania Tournament being hosted in Devonport by Van Diemen Rollers.

Make sure you come along!

VDR Graduation Bout

header.jpg

This weekend saw the graduation bout for the new "freshies" at Van Diemen Rollers. This means that they are competent enough with their skills to play in a bout with all the hits and shouldn't get hurt (well to much).

I have photographed these bouts for a couple of years now and took the opportunity to do something totally different than I normal do. Firstly I used zones with my strobes. This basically meant that I could turn them on and off in different areas and change their output level as well. Secondly, instead of documenting the bout, I took time to look for particular shots. Lastly while I didn't really think about it during the bout I knew that I really wanted to try just doing a black and white bout.

I have this love of really contrasty black and whites, the punch they deliver visually can be amazing. While I don't suggest this is always the way to go, in this case it was what I really wanted to do.  The only images in colour are the team group shoots.
