Samantha - Low Light Portraits

Captured using Sony A7s

Light is something that photographers work with. I started as a sound engineer, which was the study, capture, release and manipulation of sound waves. I have always thought of photography in similar way, just the waves are a lot faster. Physics wasn't ever my strongest science subject, but it has followed me (or is it the other way around) since I started working for myself and passions became part of my livelihood.

For anyone who has ever taken a photo in a darkened space without flash. Trying to capture what our eyes see is the holy grail of optics and photography. Over the decades the technology has increased and made this much more of a reality. Some cameras can 'see' in almost total darkness. Quality is always affected but photographers have adapted to the challenge and creates regardless.

This shoot was interesting as we had a very small hotel room and either really awful overhead light or small sources like table lights. This was the first shoot I did with a Sony A7s camera which purportedly has the best lowlight ability of any digital camera on the market at the time of use. It was a challenge to use, totally different physically and it having an electronic viewfinder was a blessing and a curse. Basically I went to the deep-end on purpose but that is the joy of this kind of shoot. The shoot also combine my normal camera (Canon 5D MKIII) and Mamiya 645 MF with film back plus the A7s.

Lots of photographers call themselves either "a strobist" or a "natural light" photographer. It's like there is an exclusivity to each style. While I more fall into the strobist area overall, I don't identify by that term. I also don't identify by "natural light" either. I that a good photographer just works with light, regardless of the source. So being able to work with anything thrown at you is part of the amazing challenge of this work. I urge photographers to look outside of those terms, and work with anything or everything available to you. This doesn't mean you shouldn't have favourites. I certainly have my "go-to" ways of shooting, but I also know that it's a crutch and if I use the same techniques all the time, others become rusty.

Therefore, the "deep end" is something I will try to push myself into as much as possible. Low light photography with and without strobe was this challenge with a mix of cameras and film + digital.

1920's Bar - Adelaide - Sapphire Snow

This is one image from a shoot in Adelaide at the amazing Botanic Bar in November. Botanic is a 1920's cocktail bar on the corner of North and East Tce. Huge thank you to the bar for giving us access, places like this are few and far between.

Sapphire is a burlesque performer who is just made for 1920's glamour. Sapphire is apart of Peaches 'n' Gin burlesque and you need to check out their work.

We shot a different ideas within the bar and even got a gramaphone into the action so more images will be coming out soon including some BTS.

Another big thanks to my assistant Sarah for assisting. Check out Sarah's photography at Sarah Kay Photography.

Lucy & Touch of Class

On Saturday I spent 8 hours with the beautiful Lucy Sky Diamond doing one last shoot before she moves to Canada. We started in the studio and then moved to amazing heritage listed B&B.

The hotel had amazing decor and the building didn't have a level floor anywhere (it made it interesting to say the least).

If you are in Perth, Western Australia next weekend, make sure you see Lucy at the Perth International Burlesque Festival.

Lucy will also performing at the PA Burlesque Festival (Pennsylvania) and the Ottawa Burlesque Festival later in the year.

Lucy is wearing her blue Ombré costume by Corsets by Nasty Ginny in this photo.

BTS (Behind the Scenes)

This shot is actually incredibly simple but does require some knowledge of colour temperature. The main light from the right is a 80'' octabox with grid in another room. No flash was used, only the warm modelling light. As it was dusk, I wanted to mix the ambient light from the window behind Lucy with the key light from the octabox. The strobe would have been too blue and made the overall colour a lot more flat. Keeping it with the modelling light only, gave me a contrast with the ambient being blue and the key light warming Lucy up. The trade off is that I needed to shoot at a high ISO, in this case 1600.

Before and After Post-Processing

As you can see from the before and after above, there isn't a huge amount of changes done to the image. I removed the smoke detector from the ceiling and some lines from the walls. I tone down the purple and contrast slightly and selectively sharpened Lucy. Lastly I reshaped the ceiling slightly so it's no so tilted. The actual building is completely skewed, but that is the charm of older buildings.

Lucy & the Lyra

On Sunday we spent a couple of hours photographing Lucy Sky Diamond on the Lyra (Ariel Hoop) at Circ's'cool

Challenging for both model and photographer but lots of fun as well.

Lucy wore three different vintage outfits for the shoot, the one in this shot is a 1960's showgirls costume from Liverpool UK.

We cannot wait to show more from this shoot, but Supanova Pop Culture Expo tour starts today, so we all have to wait.

Big thanks to Reese Truscott for being my assistant on the day.
